Just the First Step!

While the resurrection of the Buckman Pool is certainly a milestone achievement, it only represents the first step in renewing the city's commitment to this long underserved part of the city. Putting aside the money now for a long-promised southeast community center is the next.

Please join your neighbors on Tuesday, October 24th at 9:00 a.m. at City Hall for doughnuts and cider as we push the City to allocate up to $5.1 million in urban renewal funds toward a community center at the former Washington High buttons while watching City Council and PDC deliberate on how our inner eastside urban renewal funds will be used.

A PDC citizen advisory committee, composed of business, neighborhood,
government, and civic representatives recommended that 10% of the
Central Eastside urban renewal budget go to a WAMO community center.

A strong community showing will help persuade City Council to recommend that PDC honor the citizen advisory committee’s recommendation to fund a WAMO community center. The PDC Board of Commissioners will vote on the Central Eastside urban renewal budget in December. Council will not take public testimony, the goal is to be there en masse with WAMO buttons to make a visual statement.

If you cannot attend the October 24th work session please email, write, phone or fax our city commissioners and ask for them to state their support for urban renewal dollars for WAMO.

Problems w/ Foam Sealer

Buckman Pool construction manager John Guiher said that some foam sealer has failed and caused uplift on about 10 feet of the new gutter. At this moment, we don't know what the impact is, either in terms of construction detailing or scheduling. The pool contractor and the supplier are developing a method of correcting this problem. Guiher will send out an update on the schedule as soon as he hears from the contractor. At this point, we don't feel the problem is severe enough to cause worry. More updates soon.

Repairs on Schedule!

Buckman Pool repairs appear to be on schedule. Pool gutters have been installed and PPS has even set aside money to repaint the pool room walls which starts on Monday. The final plaster coat for the pool happens during the first week of June followed by leak testing and making sure everything is operational.

Portland Public Parks has set up a website to get our feedback on some signage options as well as what we think of lane markers on the ceiling. Please visit this website and add your comments.

Buckman Elementary School is thinking of hiring an artist to do a mural around the exterior pool entrance. Keep that in mind when you vote for a sign option.

If you have kids, please be aware that Buckman will have a swim team this summer, but only if we can get enough kids on it! Please sign up soon!
